INTERNSHIP HALTED

 
 

So this semester I hired an intern from Houston Community College.  Her name is Michelle and she has been wonderful.  I really think that teaching photographers will be something I  explore going forward.

It's the first time I've worked with an intern on a regular basis and it was a challenge for me to figure out a time schedule and be consistent for her to get all her hours for the internship.  I realized I had the work to give her, but teaching her to do it took time, and I'm not the most disciplined person so scheduling the time was difficult.

We were all set to start to open our studio rental business, we were in the middle of senior and sports season and family portraits were around the corner.  Then the Coronavirus pandemic hit and our world came to a screeching halt.  In 4 hours my business almost completely halted.  I had to close the studio and schools were closed.

With that being said, the internship also came to a halt.  Even though I still have work to do almost every day, with 3 kids and a husband home, distance learning and social distancing, well I haven't seen Michelle in awhile.

She is still set to graduate- we think.  So I'm trying to keep her busy and learning while we were separated and essentially shut down so I asked her to write some blogs.

Here are her first one and some photos that she took while we went out together.  I know she'll be a big part of LC Photographers when we get back to business.

Hello, my name is Michelle and I'm in my last semester at HCC obtaining a degree in Digital Photography.  I never thought I'd find an internship, but I'm super thankful that Laura and I were in the right place at the right time.  So far I've assisted her with setting up equipment, photo booths, and second photographer at events.  She has shown me her editing, print and business process.  Sometimes I wonder how she juggles family life and running her own business, then I remember she's straight up a BOSS.

I always feel motivated to shoot after every time I see her because I know that when I leave she's most likely taking pictures of her kids no matter how busy her life is.

I want to capture the beautiful moments of my life just like her.

Working with Laura is very different from school.  I'm not just taking pictures for a grade anymore, I'm helping build a business.

I'm always nervous before every new task she gives me, but once I start working I end up having a lot of un.

There is so much more to do and learn from her.  In the last couple of portrait sessions, she showed me how she poses her clients, which is something that I struggle with, especially with groups.
This virus has put a pause on everything.  I was looking forward to learning and helping her build the new studio business.  But now my classes are online and I fear that I may not get enough hours for my internship to graduate.  I'm hoping everything will fall into place for Laura and I like it did in the beginning.
